“Teaching to the Specific Needs of Each Child.”
The Village Christian Academy was founded out of a deep passion for teaching and a belief that every child has the ability to learn when given the right tools and approach. What began with the joy of helping a struggling 4th grader learn to read grew into a lifelong mission rooted in the philosophy: “Every child can learn. We just need to know how to teach them.”
With more than 14 years of experience, passion, and dedication, The Village Christian Academy stands as a testimony to the belief that with the right approach and support, every child can reach their fullest potential. Today, the school remains committed to Principal Helen Carr’s philosophy, empowering teachers to adapt their methods to the unique needs of each scholar while nurturing both academic growth and personal development.
Helen Carr, Founder and Principal
Helen Carr, the founder and director of The Village Christian Academy, attended Wayne County Schools in Mt. Olive, NC. While taking a Child Care Services class in high school, Mrs. Carr was bitten by the bug of teaching. She had the amazing experience of teaching a struggling 4th grader how to read! Upon receiving a teaching scholarship, Mrs. Carr attended UNC Charlotte, where she received a BS in Special Education. After working six years in the CMS school system as a teacher, reading specialist, and summer reading lab coordinator, Mrs. Carr began her family.
This was the pivotal movement not only in Mrs. Carr's life but in the history of The Village Christian Academy. Mr. Carr has always been intrigued by Mrs. Carr's teaching philosophy:
"Every child can learn. We just need to know how to teach them."
After discussing the matter they decided to homeschool their kids. They believed that by homeschooling their kids, not only would they be able to learn at their own pace but it would also empower them to embrace their own style of learning. They have seen the fruit of their labor as their son enters his last semester of law school, their oldest daughter completes her first semester of Dr. of Physical Therapy school, and as their youngest daughter prepares to start her journey in college.
As Mrs. Carr was working with her own kids, other parents started asking her to work with their children as well. Working out of her home, the number of scholars increased to the point where working out of the home was no longer feasible. Hence, the Village Christian Academy was born. During this time Mrs. Carr educated her kids along with new scholars using the exact same philosophy:
"Every child can learn. We just need to know how to teach them."
Mrs. Carr extends this same belief to her teachers by empowering them to use the methods that they feel best exemplify their teaching style and tailoring that style to the needs of each scholar. Armed with 14 years of knowledge, experience, passion, and love, Mrs. Carr knows that her philosophy is true and is ready to assist every parent in helping their children reach their fullest potential knowing that:
"Every child can learn. We just need to know how to teach them."
